Ceramic Theater
A vanished playhouse brought touring performers, graduations and movies into the pottery city’s daily life.

A stage for the city
The Ceramic Theater opened in 1904. Its Rotary marker describes a 1,200-seat venue that hosted plays, visiting performers, school graduations and movies. The range of uses matters: this was both an entertainment business and a setting for important community occasions. It helps explain why theater history belongs alongside the factories in the story of an industrial city.
A building lost, a story retained
The theater was demolished in 1961, according to the marker and local theater histories. The marker on East Fourth Street recalls the building rather than identifying a surviving auditorium. Pair this stop with the Traveler’s Hotel story across the former theater district to understand how performance, lodging and commerce once supported one another.
